Sports
Beverages
The New Zealand market has seen
a huge growth in sports nutrition products, especially
beverages.
At HWL we have played around with various formulations,
and even tested some of the recipes on ourselves! Half
the battle is getting a reasonable blend of ingredients
that tastes good enough to drink, while still delivering
the right balance of sodium, potassium, other minerals
and energy.

| Acidulants |

Citric
Acid is a natural acidulant that
gives a pleasant acid note.
Tartaric
acid is a natural
acidulant, but with a slightly more acidic profile than citric
acid.
Other
less commonly used acidulants are summarised in the Acidulants section. |
| Colours |
| |
HWA offers
a comprehensive range of natural and artificial colours
for use in all food and beverage applications.
Our suppliers, DD
Williamson and Phytone,
cover the colour spectrum. |
| Minerals |
Exercise
produces many changes to the body, including
the loss of water and minerals. The addition
of minerals to beverages can replace those lost
during exercise, allowing for prolonged sports
activity and better recovery.

Sodium
Citrate and ADM Potassium
Citrate are ideal salts for use
in sports beverages. They have a lower salt
perception in comparison with sodium and
potassium chloride and are made to strict
USP / BP standards.
HWA has a comprehensive range
of high quality Inorganic
mineral salts for use in beverage fortification. |
| Nutraceuticals |

HERBAFOOD,
a division of Herbstreith & Fox,
has a range of apple and citrus-derived fibres,
including Herbacel AQ Plus Citrus Fibre. These
fibres have very high water-holding capacity
and have shown to sequester heavy metals, as
well as promoting good intestinal health.
Hawaiian Spirulina,
from Cyanotech is
a micro-algae that is high in all-vegetable protein, rich in
beta carotene, iron, vitamin B-12 and the rare, essential fatty
acid, GLA. It offers a striking profile of vitamins, minerals
and phytonutrients.
Spirulina beta carotene is ten times more concentrated than carrots.
Spirulina also has the broad range of amino acids, along with iron
and contains the essential fatty acid Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). |
| Sweeteners |
| HWA
offers a range of sweeteners. |
Daepyung
Rebaten (Rebauside A 97%) is a natural low
calorie sweetener
extracted from the Stevia plant, which has
just been approved for use by ANZFA. It is
an excellent sweetener for application in
low calorie products.
High Intensity sweeteners such as sucralose and acesulphame
K are also available.
We find that a combination of Fructose
and Maltodextrin works well together. |
